You get a non-default setting when you run the Exchange 2007 BPA. It says:Disk timeout on server SOLACESERVER.solace.local is not set at the default of 10 seconds. This is normal if third-party storage software is installed. Current timeout value is 30 seconds.

As the message says, if you use some type of storage software, leave this be. I do not use any of this software, so I want to change it back to default. not that it might cause damage, but if it shows up here then it is a possability. As always make sure you backup and do this on a test server or in mock. I have no test server and I am daring, so I am going to do it during lunch on a Wednesday.

Microsoft tells us to:

To revert to the default configuration
1.Open a registry editor, such as Regedit.exe or Regedt32.exe.

2.Navigate to:

HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Disk\TimeOutValue

3.In the right pane, delete the TimeOutValue entry. Alternatively, double-click the TimeOutValue entry and set it to one of the following values:

On a non-clustered server, set the value to 10.

On a clustered server, set the value to 20.

If your hardware manufacturer recommends a different value for either a clustered or non-clustered system, use the value from your hardware manufacturer instead.

4.Close the registry editor, and then restart the computer for the change to take effect.

So let’s do what they tell us. Ill add some screen shots.

I would like to point out this warning:

Installing host bus adapters (HBA) or other storage controllers can cause this key to be created and configured. When you install or reinstall these drivers, the TimeOutValue registry value is overwritten with the value that is required by those drivers. You may have to contact the hardware vendor to determine the correct TimeOutValue registry value for your configuration.

Read it carefully. I HAVE installed a HBA as well as a storage controller. I looked up the values for my HP Proliant, and they should be at thirty. I will leave this entry alone and safely ignore it from within the BPA.

So I come into work, and load up the console only to see yellow and red warnings. Crap. Well, time to start fixing things.

First thing I notice, is that one of my backups failed. this is troublesome, as my past problem with backups and VSS were quite an issue. So I go to the Backups tab, and click backup history. I then see the error “A Volume Shadow Copy Service operation failed. Unknown error (0x800423f3)”. This happened at 7AM, but not at 8PM- this leads me to believe the VSS service was busy so it could not backup my server. On to the event log.
 
I open the event log, and the first 1,000 entries are Outlook connecting and disconnecting. Ill investigate that later- now I will turn off outlook and scroll down to 7 AM. There it is, 3 events. Event ID’s 7001, 12298 and 12310. Before I investigate this, I want to make sure no other tasks are scheduled to run at 7AM. I go to Task Scheduler, and go through each task- theres nothing running at 7AM. I did however find two tasks named FSSScanXXX. That rung a bell as Forefront Security, which is uninstalled- deleted those tasks.

I plugged the three events into Google, and found this page. That post mentioned Hotfixes, but I don’t think I am ready for that yet. I did install Exchange 2007 SP2 recently, maybe that is the issue. Ill keep looking.
I stmble upon this post at TechArena, which rang a bell. I just installed Exchange 2007 Rollup 4- though at the failure time it was not installed. Well see how it reacts after the update.
 
The manually run Backup ran fine, no Eventlog errors or failures. Ill comment more on this once the scheduled task runs at 7 AM.
 
Update: The backup completed successfully overnight. It seems this error was in fact caused by a transient error and was corrected by applying Microsoft Exchange SP2 Update Rollup 4.

I recently tried to install Desktop Experience on SBS 2008 to enable some of the advanced features of WSS 3.0 such as exploring content with Windows Explorer, saving directly to document libraries from Microsof Office, and browsing the site directories. I made the mistake of applying this feature addition while other server upgrades were going on, namely an upgrade to the latest BIOS. This was a mistake- make sure you enable this feature and reboot when nothing else is pending on the server, such as a reboot from other upgrades.

Anyhow, after the reboot the server was trashed. Couldnt get into Windows, no safe mode- nothing. So I had to perform a full server restore. Being as I have had to restore the server twice with major failures requiring a format, I was hesitant to do this. The good news is that it all went seamlessly.

Since the server was going to be offline, and it was during a work day- my office needed internet connection. I did this easily by logging into the router and enabling DHCP with the default settings. Now- time to fix this box.

I rebooted the server with the Windows SBS2008 CD in the CD rom Drive. I then entered the BIOS by pressing F2, and changed some of the boot options, which had been reset to default. I chose to try to boot CD-Rom first, then the RAID HDD, then Network Boot. I disabled USB boot, because the HP Proliant servers have issued with having backup devices attached while booting. I did make sure USB support was enabled though.

After I re-booted again and hit a key to boot from the CD, I entered into Windows Restore. I selected Comple PC Restore. At this point I have none of my devices attached, not even the network. My RAID uses Embedded G5 RAID Controller software, which did not exist. So I plugged in my USB drive with the drivers on it, and clicked load drivers. I then selected my RAID driver, and then selected the now showing Windoes Server 2008 installation.

It did a quick search coming back that there were no backup devices attached- good. You don’t want them attached untill this point. I plugged in my 1Tb external HDD and hit retry a couple of times. A dialog box then appears allowing you to select a backup. I left this alone, as the most recent one was the one I was seeking. Note: Windows Time is not loaded at this time, so the time stamp on the backup will be offset by your timezone. I hit next.

Now it asks you what sort of restore you wish. I was nervous about the Format and Reinstall from backup options, so I went with restore these drives instead. I clicked advanced options and made sure I was restoring the system partition C:, as well as D:, which contains my Exchange and Sharepoint Databases. I left out A:, an alternate backup device. I then clicked restore, and let her run. One hour and forty-one minutes later I had a rebooting server. The first thing I did w3as go in and disable Windows Update temporarily untill I made sure everything was stable. I plugged in the network cable, and changed DHCP off of the router back to the server, and gave it a few minutes to sync up.I then ran some file level backups- since the server was restored, several workstations saved important files onto the server, such as medical billing claims and accounting Quickbooks backups. After these were restored, I ran SBS2008 BPA and Exchange2007 BPA to check for errors. I also had to rerun the Fix my Internet Wizard and also reconfigured my external domain name.
